About the ESOL Online Roundtable

 

The ESOL Online Roundtable was founded by Dr. Randall Sadler (University of Illinois) and Ju Seong (John) Lee (University of Illinois) in 2014. The Roundtable is an international online academic venue for the ESOL researchers and practitioners that address a broad range of English-related issues language education, second and foreign language pedagogy, language policy and planning, etc. 

 

Future Roundtables are always listed on the homepage of this site.  Click on the how to watch link at the top of the page for information about watching the Livestream.  Past events are archived, including full videos.  Click on the past events link in the navigation bar to see that information. 

 

The Roundtables have three primary goals:

  • Promote professionalism in English education

  • Provide a high quality online resource

  • Create collaboration in our global community of educators

 

Specific objectives include:

  • Advance the quality of English teaching through professional development and research

  • Provide new English teaching model(s) through Computer Mediated Communication (CMC)

  • Expose viewers to different varieties of Englishes (e.g. English usage and functions)

  • Connect students in the classrooms with ELT experts worldwide

  • Create/provide authentic English teaching materials for teacher education

  • Create opportunities for scholarly communication and professional networking by hosting online roundtables

  • Provide opportunities for publication/presentation and career advancement for participants collaborating internationally

 

The Roundtables may cover any topic of interest to people in the field of ESOL.  This can include topics such as:

  • Teacher Education

  • Sociolinguistics applied to ESOL

  • Technology and Language Learning

  • Telecollaboration

  • World Englishes

  • Program Administration

  • Teaching specific topics (Reading, Writing, etc.)

  • Etc.
